Dragon Born

Written by: Lejon

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

It would seem that I am going to be pulled into the modern era of Dungeons & Dragons. Kicking and screaming. (Well, there’ll be kicking and screaming. I’m pretty sure there will. It may not be mine.)

D&D came out with their Fourth edition recently. I kept resisting the urge to do anything with it. I’d been burned by the whole 3.0-3.5 experience, and I really wasn’t into caring about D&D anymore.

Last night I had the opportunity to play Cosmic Encounter for the first time.

It’s a game of diplomatic back-stabbing, and galactic colonization.

Tsuro, the Game of the Path

A light game. A game of quiet strategy. A game of survival. These are ways to describe Tsuro, the Game of the Path. The rules are marvelously simple, and can be summed up as “move your piece around the board, and be the last pawn standing at the end.” The board, however, is not an unchanging world. It shifts with each player’s turn, and the numbers of players can vary from as few as two to as many as eight with each number in between altering the play in subtle yet definite and interesting ways.

Let us begin at the beginning, (more…)

Lament of Eastern Block

It would be a great day to say that I love all games, and that all games are equal in my eyes. That’s a wonderful sentiment, but it’s about as honest as a used car salesman. There are those games that I simply refuse to play. Case in point: RISK

Getting Henged

Forged of sweat, blood, and stone left sitting out on the Salisbury plain, it doesn’t take much effort to figure out what people mean when they mention “Stonehenge”. Ancient monoliths and trilithons set about in an enormous construct of Druidic proportions that we still know very little about. So, of course, there has to be a boardgame based on it.

Stonehenge: An Anthology Boardgame” is, in fact, more than a simple boardgame. (more…)

I Was A Toaster: A Geek About Galactica

Written by: Blue

Friday, March 13th, 2009

So a couple of weeks ago I sat in on a friend’s inaugural run of the Battle Star Galactica board game (also known to some as Shadows Over Caprica for its similarities to Shadows Over Camelot.) Both games are from the fine folks at Fantasy Flight.

I came into this game fond of Shadows Over Camelot, but somewhat ignorant to BSG. I didn’t watch the original series and I’ve not watched this latest iteration. I have several friends who’ve gotten sucked into it and I plan on watching it at my leisure. So when we started the game I had an interesting point of view: game I’ve never played based on a show I’ve never seen.

It’s a complex world we live in, where every little thing in the events
that surround us can push us to greater levels of stress that leaves us
nearly no escape, except through our TV programs, Movies, and books. We
think of games and gaming as more a simplistic form of entertainment.
But, if we dig a little deeper, we will find that games are used to
simulate real-world events, model complex corporate actions or military
strategies, and also for (more…)

So let’s talk about games. What’s out there? What’s your thing? What do you love?
What do you hate? What are you dying to try?

Let’s take at least a cursory look at what’s out there, why you might want to play
them, and why you might not want to.

Scrabble Takes a L3FT Turn Towards L33T

Written by: Crazy_Knife_Throwin_Injun

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Do you speak L33T? Have you considered that there’s an entire generation that understands L33T about as well as their primary language? Do you think a neat game could be constructed around it? If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, you’re in for a treat. The classic board game Scrabble® has been (more…)
