Dragon Born

It would seem that I am going to be pulled into the modern era of Dungeons & Dragons. Kicking and screaming. (Well, there’ll be kicking and screaming. I’m pretty sure there will. It may not be mine.)

D&D came out with their Fourth edition recently. I kept resisting the urge to do anything with it. I’d been burned by the whole 3.0-3.5 experience, and I really wasn’t into caring about D&D anymore.

Then I listened to a Wizard of the Coast podcast that recorded the exploits of a Fourth Edition game (starring Gabe and Tycho [Penny Arcade], Scott Kurts [PVPonline], and Wil Wheaton [Radio Free Burrito... Oh, and Star Trek: TNG]). This piqued my interest, but I was still luke warm on the idea of joining a campaign.

A few weeks later, The Jolly Red Giant discovered the Fourth Edition rules, and he liked a lot of the things they’ve done to fix what he felt was wrong with 3.5. He began to Jones for a campaign. So, he proposed this as one of the Guise Knights weekly get-together events.

I was still barely interested. We were generating characters. I chose to go last to “fill in anything that was missing”. Yep, I was just that driven to play. Everyone else had their characters built and began fleshing them out. I read the manual.

It’s a strange thing that will make a person do a 180° on wanting to do something. I read through the race categories and came across “Dragonborn”. You can play a humanoid dragon-thing. When I saw this, my head nearly spun 360° and I suddenly wanted to play one.

Turns out, we needed a “defender”. So, I’ve chosen to play a paladin. Dragonborn Paladin. I’m big, I’m burly, I get to hit things, and I can spit poison. Top it off: I’m a Good Guy!

What’s not to love?

I’m sure we’ll have updates on the adventures, once they get rolling, but for now I can safely say that Fourth Edition has intrigued me enough to swing back to D&D. Wonders will never cease.
