An Evening’s Cosmic Encounter

Last night I had the opportunity to play Cosmic Encounter for the first time.
It’s a game of diplomatic back-stabbing, and galactic colonization.
The object of the game is to colonize five worlds outside your home planetary system before anyone else playing does. You do this through a series of attacks and negotiations. If that were the crux of the game, it would get boring quite quickly; however, the game has a mechanic which allows each race being represented a special power that is both unique to that race alone, and breaks the rules of the game (in accordance with the rules).
Game play was a brisk 90 minutes (which included instruction time), and we had a full complement of five players. The game will seat two to five, so we were all full up.
The game is more entertaining if a lot of backstabbing happens, but sometimes it may be in one’s best interest to negotiate terms. Quickly. This is not a beer and pretzels style of game, it requires some basic skills of math and understanding your opponents. It’s good fun, but I don’t know if I’d play it all the time.
If you’ve played this before, let us know in the Forum, or feel free to leave a comment!
